Materials Testing and NDT Technician

We are a market leader in Aerospace composite manufacturing, working with exciting technologies and materials to design and build advanced composite structural components and assemblies. We are seeking a Materials Testing and NDT Technician to join our Materials Laboratory/NDT team at our sites in Crewkerne, Somerset.

This is available as a trainee opportunity so whilst knowledge of materials testing and/or NDT and Lab/Quality experience is beneficial, it is not essential for this role. This is a great opportunity to develop materials testing and NDT experience and qualification if you have a strong desire to learn and build a technical/materials testing skillset.

The role

The key purpose of this role is to carry out testing of products to ensure they fully meet the customer acceptance criteria and have been produced in line with the relevant manufacturing instructions / specification, and to maintain and further develop the test records and analysis to ensure traceability requirements are adhered to. Key work activities will include:

- Data entry and administration

- Test sample preparation, visual and mechanical testing of in-process components, including hardness testing (barcol, shore A, shore D), hammer tap testing and mechnical testing (flexural, lapshear/tensile tests, and climbing drum peel tests)

- Maintaining test records and analysis results to ensure traceability requirements and demonstrate proficiency

- Adherence to safety procedures and guidelines in the use of test equipment and in test activities at all times

- Provide support to all relevant functions (i.e. the Materials Laboratory, Quality team, Production teams); promote and support a culture of continuous improvement within the team

The person

- Knowledge of materials testing / NDT and Lab / Quality experience is desirable but not essential

- Good communication skills both verbal and written

- Strong practical skills with a high level of manual dexterity

- Good concentration levels, attention to detail and methodical approach

- Well-organised; able to manage a range of activities and priorities

- The ability to follow written and verbal instructions and accurately keep records

- Computer literate, Windows based

- A good team player with a flexible attitude to work load/tasks and a continuous improvement mind-set

- A strong desire to learn and develop

- A safety-conscious approach to work

- Must be reliable, have the ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team

The standard 'day shift' weekly pattern is as follows:

  • Monday - Thursday 8am-4:30pm
  • Friday 8am-2pm

There will also be a requirement to work overtime as needed.

Pay range: starts at £18,000 per annum / £9.11 per hour.
